The moment when the collective witches took off their wigs caused a real frisson!
Towards the end of the 17th century, when large wigs came into fashion, it came for convenience to be constructed gown-wise, open down the front and buttoned at the neck, a fashion which still partially survives, notably at the universities.
The wigs and clothing were seldom if ever washed and became particularly musty after a while.
However, since 1834, the wigs have been made from horses ' manes, relieving their owners of the need to comb them.
It's a pity about the hair tho - neither shiny pates nor wigs seem to work.
