The first actual find of a palaeolithic implement was that of a rudely fashioned flint in a sandbank at Menchecourt in 1841 by Boucher de Perthes.
Later, unfortunately, the tide went out and we hit a sandbank but the rest of the activity was fantastic.
If you don't live near a sandbank, you can find small bags of sand at your local arts and crafts store.
In the centre of Whairikauri is a large brackish lake called Tewanga, which at the southern end is separated from the sea by a sandbank only i 50 yds.
The capacious bay, formerly known as the Bay of St Lawrence from a religious house long since demolished, is protected by a sandbank that ends here, and is hence known as the Tail of the Bank.
