He retired with the honorary rank of colonel in 1880.
Dr Caird received the honorary degree of D.C.L.
The university of Aberdeen conferred upon him the honorary degree of D.D.
He went to the Transvaal in 1884 and became honorary secretary to the Johannesburg Reform committee.
In 1882 he became honorary chaplain and sub-almoner to Queen Victoria, and in the following year was appointed dean of Windsor, and domestic chaplain to the queen.
