One great drawback to this system was that elevation was given with reference to the plane of the racers upon which the mounting moved, and as this was not always truly horizontal grave errors were introduced.
On the other hand, there are mares of little or no value as racers who have become the mothers of some of the most celebrated horses on the turf; among them we may cite Queen Mary, Pocahontas and Paradigm.
In height it will be found that the most successful racers average from 15 to 162 hands, the former being considered somewhat small, while the latter is unquestionably very large; the mean may be taken as between 152 and 16 hands (the hand = 4 in.).
Meanwhile, I watched other bike, foot and ski racers appear from the Dalzell Gorge with tales of waist-deep snow and whiteout blizzards.
Somewhere in the middle the racers were not so sure what to do, so consequently that race was scrapped for the 3.5m fleet.
