N. discoidalis has dark purple flowers edged with white, and the flowers of its variety elegans are maroon margined with white.
When young the leaves are margined with red and brown.
Its large leaves are cut and undulated, and tipped and margined with scattered spines; they are bright glistening green, with broad white veins.
