Among the principal modern industries are paper-making, carried on on the banks of the Darent, Medway, Cray and neighbouring streams; engineering, chemical and other works along the Thames; manufactures of bricks, tiles, pottery and cement, especially by the lower Medway and the Swale.
On the south, narrow branches of the Swale, formerly wider, divide the isles of Harty and Elmley from the main island, of which, however, they now practically form part.
It lies in the central plain of Yorkshire, on the river Ure near its confluence with the Swale.
These included historic open pastures, and land adjoining the river Swale.
Beware; a shot short of perfection will suffer the consequences of a deep swale to the left or water to the right.
