The Peace Corps, Americorps, and several other government-sponsored programs that are aimed at recent college graduates offer student loan deferment, repayment, or forgiveness options for many applicants.
The government also offers an income contingent repayment plan and deferment and forbearance options that can put your payments on hold for a period of time if you are truly struggling to make ends meet.
If you don't meet the qualifications to receive deferment, you may still be able to extend the time for making payments or lower your payments if you have medical or financial problems.
Volunteers in the Peace Corps can apply for deferment of different loan programs and may even earn cancellation of Perkins Loans (15% for each year of service to the Peace Corps).
Loan cancellation and deferment options should also be considered as a possibility to make college affordable for single women parents.
